Professional profile
Father James Baraniak, O.Praem. was named the 12th pastor of Old St. Joseph Church-St. Norbert Parish on the Feast of Saint James, July 25, 2004. Father Jim is the youngest of four children born on the Feast of Saint James—his patronal feast day—of Jackie and the late Jack Baraniak of Antigo. He is a son of Ss. Mary & Hyacinth Parish of Antigo.

Father Jim’s interest in the priesthood was stimulated and cultivated not only by his parents but by some very impressive priests who served the Catholic community of his native home. He graduated from Saint Mary Elementary School in 1980 and Antigo High School in 1984. Upon graduation from high school, Father Jim ventured to St. Norbert College to begin his collegiate studies. He chose St. Norbert because of its small size (1750 students back then); because of it's proximity to his home town (not too far, not too close); because of its Catholic heritage (he didn't know what Norbertine was all about at that time); and he came to St. Norbert because his sister had already blazed a bit of a trail for him given she attended St. Norbert and was one year ahead of him throughout his formative academic training.

He was so comfortable with the college community and his sister’s friends that he had met prior to application time that he chose to attend St. Norbert. The young psychology major enjoyed college life at St. Norbert very much; nevertheless, it was after his sophomore year that he entered the Norbertine community of St. Norbert Abbey.

While there certainly were detours and stumbling blocks associated with the transition of moving from MMM Hall (then a residence hall for 195 men) to the hallowed halls of SNA, he attributes close friendships within the Order that sustained his membership back then and also today!

Father Jim was vested a Norbertine on the Feast of Saint Augustine in 1986, Professed Simple Vows on the same Feast Day in 1988 and Solemn Vows on the Feast of Saint Augustine, 1991. Father Jim was ordained a Transitional Deacon in September of 1992 and, upon the completion of graduate studies, he was ordained a Norbertine priest on the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord (in the midst of an ice storm) on 3 January 1993.

During his years in initial formation, he served as an instructor at the Norbertine Willebrord Catholic High School of Chicago and Abbot Pennings High School on the college campus. Upon ordination, Father Jim was appointed associate pastor of Old St. Joseph Church and the Associate Director of Campus Ministry. Upon the election of Abbot E. Thomas DeWane, O.Praem., Father Jim was appointed Canonry Vocation Coordinator in June of 1995 (a position he held for 12 years) while serving as Associate Pastor of the newly established Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in De Pere. After six years at Lourdes, Father Jim became full-time Vocation Coordinator and established the Office for Norbertine Life and Vocation in the John Minahan Science Hall.

Today Father Jim wears many different hats as he enjoys ministry to the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the imprisoned and the free. This year Father Jim begins his 15th year of association with the Green Bay Packers where he serves at home and on the road as their Roman Catholic chaplain. This year also marks his 13th year of sacramental ministry to the inmates at Green Bay Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

In his spare time, Father Jim enjoys watching DVDs (he can usually be found on “new-release-Tuesday nights” shopping at Best Buy); running; and he enjoys reading about American Catholic Church history and spirituality as well as an interest in students at-risk and gang membership.

Continuing in his eighth year as the pastor of Old St. Joe’s and St. Norbert College, Father Jim is excited about the return of our upperclassmen and he welcomes the association of a very large class of freshmen to our parish where students and “year ‘rounders” are “one in mind and heart on our way home to God!
